I fell in love with these quirky ceramic epaulettes by ceramicist and illustrator
Katie Spragg. I like the fact that these epaulettes have a very feminine spin on the military fashion trend and that they mix fragility (of the porcelain material) with a bold colour and style statement. I can really imagine them adding a new lease of life to my favourite sweaters. The epaulettes were inspired by the tradition of animal military mascots where the animals receive a proper rank and their share of army rations like the much loved penguin Sir Nils Olav III who is mascot and Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Royal Guards. Katie currently works from her studio in Battersea, London, and uses a variety of techniques to create her art including water erosion, screen-printing and digital transfers. Her pieces always have an interesting and curious story behind them and you can find out more about her artwork at her website.
